Formatting, content, and cultural differences when applying to international roles from India. What to change, what to remove, and how to position yourself.
Indian resumes and US/UK resumes have different conventions — and submitting an Indian-format resume to a US company signals you haven't done your research.
Here are the key differences:
| Element | Indian Resume | US/UK Resume |
|---|---|---|
| Length | Often 2-3 pages | Strictly 1 page (under 8 years) |
| Photo | Common | Do NOT include |
| DOB/Age | Sometimes included | Never include |
| Nationality | Often listed | Never include |
| Father's name | Sometimes seen | Completely omit |
| Objective statement | Common | Replaced with summary |
| CTC/Salary | Expected by some portals | Never include |
| Hobbies | Common | Omit entirely |
US/UK hiring managers don't know what Rs 2Cr means. Convert or contextualize:
Scale advantage: India operates at enormous scale — 100M+ user applications, billion-transaction payment systems. Emphasize scale metrics that global companies respect.
Cost-efficiency narrative: Indian engineering teams often deliver 10x more at 1/3rd the cost. For startups, framing your experience as "delivered enterprise-grade infrastructure on a lean budget" is compelling.
Time zone: For US remote roles, clearly state your availability for overlap (IST is 10.5 hours ahead of US Eastern — early morning or late evening overlap is often possible). For UK roles, the overlap is 4.5 hours — quite workable.
For US applications: If you need H-1B sponsorship, most large tech companies (Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta) sponsor H-1B. Mention it in the cover letter: "I would require H-1B sponsorship and am available to start on [date]." Don't put it on the resume.
For UK applications: Many Indian engineers qualify for the Global Talent Visa (for exceptional tech talent) or Skilled Worker Visa (for employer-sponsored roles). Research your eligibility at gov.uk.
