How to Apply for US/UK Jobs From India: Resume Guide 2026

Formatting, content, and cultural differences when applying to international roles from India. What to change, what to remove, and how to position yourself.

The Indian Resume vs. the International Resume

Indian resumes and US/UK resumes have different conventions — and submitting an Indian-format resume to a US company signals you haven't done your research.

Here are the key differences:

ElementIndian ResumeUS/UK Resume
LengthOften 2-3 pagesStrictly 1 page (under 8 years)
PhotoCommonDo NOT include
DOB/AgeSometimes includedNever include
NationalityOften listedNever include
Father's nameSometimes seenCompletely omit
Objective statementCommonReplaced with summary
CTC/SalaryExpected by some portalsNever include
HobbiesCommonOmit entirely

What to Remove for International Applications

  • Photo — discrimination laws in US/UK mean photos raise red flags
  • Date of birth — age discrimination laws make this a legal liability
  • Nationality or visa status (initially) — address visa in cover letter if relevant, not resume
  • Father's name or marital status — irrelevant and signals unfamiliarity with norms
  • "Objective" statement — replace with a results-focused "Professional Summary"
  • Class X/XII marks — only list your highest degree
  • Hobbies and interests — unless directly relevant to the role

Currency and Scale Adjustments

US/UK hiring managers don't know what Rs 2Cr means. Convert or contextualize:

  • Rs 2Cr ARR → "$250K ARR" or "Rs 2Cr (~$240K USD) ARR"
  • Indian company names may be unfamiliar — add brief context: "Swiggy (food delivery, $1B+ GMV)"
  • CGPA out of 10 → add conversion: "9.1/10 (equivalent to 4.0 GPA)"

Positioning Indian Experience for Global Roles

Scale advantage: India operates at enormous scale — 100M+ user applications, billion-transaction payment systems. Emphasize scale metrics that global companies respect.

Cost-efficiency narrative: Indian engineering teams often deliver 10x more at 1/3rd the cost. For startups, framing your experience as "delivered enterprise-grade infrastructure on a lean budget" is compelling.

Time zone: For US remote roles, clearly state your availability for overlap (IST is 10.5 hours ahead of US Eastern — early morning or late evening overlap is often possible). For UK roles, the overlap is 4.5 hours — quite workable.

Visa and Work Authorization

For US applications: If you need H-1B sponsorship, most large tech companies (Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta) sponsor H-1B. Mention it in the cover letter: "I would require H-1B sponsorship and am available to start on [date]." Don't put it on the resume.

For UK applications: Many Indian engineers qualify for the Global Talent Visa (for exceptional tech talent) or Skilled Worker Visa (for employer-sponsored roles). Research your eligibility at gov.uk.

Best Channels for International Applications

  • LinkedIn Easy Apply — set location preference to target country
  • Glassdoor/Indeed with geo-filter
  • Levels.fyi — lists companies that sponsor visas
  • LinkedIn connections at target companies — a warm referral cuts through the international applicant noise significantly
