Return to Work Resume After a Career Break

How to write a resume after a career gap -- address it honestly, reframe the narrative, and position yourself for a strong re-entry.

Career Gaps Are More Common Than You Think

In 2026, career breaks are normalized -- 62% of professionals report at least one gap in their career history. What matters is how you frame it.

Step 1: Name It, Don't Hide It

Unexplained gaps raise more suspicion than explained ones. Add a one-line entry:

`

Career Break (Parental Leave) 2023 - 2024

Full-time caregiver for newborn and elderly parent

`

You don't owe details. A one-line honest label closes the question.

Step 2: Address the Gap in Your Summary

"Senior software engineer with 8 years of experience in fintech and e-commerce. Returning from a 14-month parental leave -- kept current through online courses (AWS Solutions Architect, 2024) and open-source contributions."

Step 3: Document What You Did During the Gap

Even if unpaid, many activities are resume-worthy:

  • Freelance / consulting projects
  • Upskilling (online courses, certifications)
  • Open-source contributions (GitHub)
  • Volunteering
  • Writing / blogging / community work

List certifications earned during the break with dates.

Step 4: Refresh Your Skills Section

If your break was 12+ months, add recency signals:

  • Update certifications
  • Mention current tools/frameworks you've self-studied
  • Reference any freelance or consulting work

What NOT to Do

  • Don't use a functional resume to hide the gap -- ATS doesn't parse them well
  • Don't apologize for the gap in the resume text
  • Don't leave years off job entries -- this raises more questions

In Cover Letters and Interviews

Be brief and confident: "I took 14 months for parental leave. During that time, I stayed current through [specific activity]. I'm ready and energized to return."
