Internship Resume Guide 2026

How to write a compelling internship resume with limited experience -- covering projects, coursework, hackathons, and skills.

The Internship Resume Mindset

You don't have 5 years of work experience. Neither does anyone else applying for this internship. What separates candidates is: clarity, specificity, and signals of initiative.

What Goes Where

Education (Top of Resume for Students)

  • University, degree, GPA (if 3.5+), expected graduation
  • Relevant coursework: Data Structures, Algorithms, Database Management, Operating Systems, Machine Learning
  • Academic awards, scholarships

Projects (Your Work Experience Substitute)

Projects are the most important section for students. Include:

  • Course projects
  • Personal projects
  • Hackathon projects
  • Open-source contributions

Example:

`

FinTrack - Personal Finance Dashboard | React, Node.js, PostgreSQL Jan 2026

  • Built full-stack app for tracking expenses across multiple bank accounts
  • Implemented Plaid API integration to sync real-time transaction data
  • Deployed on Vercel with 40+ test users from university community

`

Skills

List programming languages, frameworks, tools -- only things you can speak to in an interview.

Work Experience (Even If Unrelated)

Part-time job, food delivery, retail -- anything shows you've worked in a professional setting.

Applying to Big Tech Internships

Timeline: Applications open August-October for summer internships. Apply early.

Resume length: 1 page, no exceptions.

Referrals: Check LinkedIn for alumni from your university at the company. A referral can move you from auto-rejected to phone screen.
