CS Student Job Search Guide 2026

A year-by-year roadmap for computer science students to build their resume, land internships, and convert to full-time offers at top companies.

The 4-Year Plan

Getting a top tech offer out of college isn't luck -- it's a 4-year project.

Freshman Year: Build Foundations

  • Do well in core CS courses (Data Structures is most important)
  • Join competitive programming club, tech club, or hackathon team
  • Build anything: CLI tool, Discord bot, small web app. Deploy it.

Sophomore Year: First Internship Season

August-October: Apply to smaller/mid-size company internships for the following summer.

Resume state: 1-2 projects, relevant coursework, competitive programming rankings (if any), GPA.

Technical prep: Start LeetCode easy problems. Complete 50 before your first technical interview.

Junior Year: The Critical Year

FAANG and top companies recruit heavily from junior internships.

September: Applications open for Google, Meta, Amazon, Microsoft summer internships.

October-December: Technical interview season:

  • 150+ LeetCode problems (mix of easy/medium)
  • System design fundamentals
  • 3-4 behavioral stories (STAR format)

During internship: Ship something. Get a return offer.

Senior Year: Convert or Recruit

If you have a return offer: Evaluate it seriously.

If recruiting for FT: September-November is the window. Resume should have:

  • 2 internships
  • 3-4 strong projects
  • Relevant coursework
  • GPA (if 3.5+)

Resume Tips for Students

  • 1 page, always
  • GPA: include if 3.5+, omit if below 3.2
  • Relevant coursework: Include courses that match the JD (Algorithms, OS, Distributed Systems, ML)
  • Projects before experience: Unless your internship is more relevant

The Referral Advantage

A referral from an employee moves you from "auto-reject" pile to "phone screen" at FAANG. LinkedIn + alumni finder + a short referral request is a 15-minute investment that can change your career trajectory.
